This feature allows AutoCAD users to maintain their designs using files exported from other CAD programs, such as 3D CAD programs, CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) programs, and file-sharing programs. For example, a user can export a 3D CAD model from a CAD program using a format that is compatible with AutoCAD, and then import the file into AutoCAD to further edit and/or process the design.

Dxf Files

Dxf stands for DXF (Drafting Exchange Format) and was developed by Microsoft as an international standard for 2D, 3D, and vector graphics data exchange. DXF files are graphics files with a.dwg extension. DXF is a CAD-centric format developed for interchange between different CAD software applications; it is not a generic graphics format, and AutoCAD users can only open and edit DXF files that were created using AutoCAD.

A DXF file contains information about the location and size of elements, text, pictures, color values, and other features, and contains only data. DXF files do not contain any drawing information or any information about the view or projection, and they don’t store information such as objects, layers, linetypes, styles, or drawing components. AutoCAD contains a library of predefined objects, linetypes, styles, and drawing components that are stored in DXF files and are used to create drawing elements such as lines, circles, and polylines.

DXF files contain a structure called a dxf tag, which contains data about the drawing elements, such as the sizes of elements, text, colors, and images, and information about the graphic elements, such as the origin and rotation angle. AutoCAD displays the information about the dxf tag in a graphic window, which is part of the DXF Export dialog box.
